Exploring Key Types of Steel for Stamping — and Which is Right for You

Material selection is arguably the most important part of any production service, which is why identifying the right steel for stamping matters.

Choosing the wrong type of steel can lead to costly errors, including rework, production delays, and added shipping expenses, and more that all lead to unneeded stress.

Winco Stamping wants to help our customers avoid that stress and help keep costs down. Let’s explore key types of steel for stamping — and identify which type is right for your project.

Annealed

Annealed steel is a common steel for stamping. It’s a unique option as it undergoes a heated treatment process that softens the steel to make it more bendable, increases ductility, relieves internal stress, and enhances machinability.

Winco Stamping offers three different types of annealed steel for stamping services: AISI 1050, AISI 1074/1075, and AISI 1095.

Hot Rolled

Hot rolled steel, also known as mild steel, is created from low carbon steel. In order to get to its final form, this steel is rolled out and processed in temperatures past its recrystallization temperature — on average, above 1700 degrees Fahrenheit. As this steel is a processed product, it offers better formability and workability, which makes it easier to work with for a secondary project.

Cold Rolled

Cold rolled steel is a byproduct of hot rolled steel, which means the predecessor has to come first. When the raw material has reached the point of being considered hot rolled steel, the product goes through a few additional processing steps.

The steel moves through an additional set of rollers that are set to room temperature. This is done to give the steel increased strength and a better surface finish, and offers higher precision since it doesn’t shrink like hot rolled steel.

Pre-Galvanized

Pre-galvanized steel is one of the most cost-effective steel options on the market. This style of steel is best used as a rust-resistant alternative to hot and cold rolled steel. Cost-effective, pre-galvanized steel is often used in moisture-resistant products.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is arguably the most popular type of steel merely from a word of mouth perspective. Everyone knows what stainless steel is and its applications in our everyday lives. But what about stainless steel for stamping?

It’s a popular option for stamping thanks to its corrosion resistance and, as the name suggests, its ability to maintain a clean, stain-free surface.
